Why Connect?

I overheard a great quote at the Association of Educational Publishers 2009 Summit a couple of weeks ago.

"Social media is mostly discussed in terms of social media. Social media should be discussed in terms of action, organization, and connecting."

As an online education director for Emantras, this statement rang mostly true. Most conversations I've overheard centered on tools rather than function and necessity.

So here's Gorilla Ed. Rather than waiting for the next industry conference to share your experiences and offer your best practices, use this community as a bridge to last the entire year. Post your questions, share your insight, and let's be agents of change in our organizations.

Let's get together on this and talk about the 800lbs Gorilla in the room. Follow me on Twitter at @gorilla_ed or on my personal account @mlamendola

Gameplay in Education

I heard some chatter about games in education and wanted to show a quick vid of how Emantras is approaching this for Criminal Justice AS programs.

Why CJ? CJ is a very popular full-online education program for a couple of reasons. First, it's employment applicability reaches many (if not all) geographic areas, which is always good for a national, full-online school. Employment opportunity looks good. Second, there's no lab activity whatsoever, making the program very "online-able", meaning a sc… Continue

Just #onemore...

I, as well my colleagues at Emantras, commend every single teacher, staff member, student, school employee, educator and enthusiast using social media tools and communities to communicate, learn, share, and celebrate.

You are the only ones who will effectively cause change in our educational system. Your tweets speak louder than words and your volume is growing everyday. I am a better elearning professional through absorbing your tweets… Continue

Augmented Learning & Mobility

The last post on Augmented Reality led me to a unique post on my Twine, Augmented Learning - see the book here from MIT Press http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=11466. This is a very interesting paper that argues the value of mobile games and the fact that they may be more effective that traditional gaming (in education). I did not have access to the book immediately but have ordered the same to delve into the logic of the author.

On the surface I see tremendous re… Continue

"Augmented reality..." what the???? - This is what our lives are about.

Interesting how tunnel vision affects what we do as a "job" making us blind to all the things that we already participate in during the course of our normal lives.

I attend learning conferences and am a part of the community where the discussions on technology and adoption have been raging and I always hear the phrases, "...we don't do that..." or "...we are focused on delivering the basic..." etc. etc... Than we all go home use our cell phones for everything else we do, computers for the other… Continue
